I specialize in family and children’s content , animation, and straight-shooting comedies. Am most known for my ability to undulate between heart and humour and root into the core of characters. How do I select projects? Something piques my darn curiosity. Could be someone I want to work with, a challenge, or subject matter…
With hundreds of thousands of onset hours, as a director I’m most at home in production. Know what it takes to make our day and enjoy creating with the crew & talent. Am a huge tech geek who can keep up with DOPs and post house techs on a myriad of topics from latest gear, software to post workflow.
I began directing in collaboration with screenwriter/playwright Steve Galluccio and never considered “screenwriting” until comedian/producer David Steinberg saw a cartoon I was doodling and said “hey you are funny – hey you should write.” Now not only do I pen screenplays as an auteur filmmaker, I also scribe-for-hire for producers who need an outline based on an existing concept as well pen scripts for other directors. Would leap to be a series’ contributor. Need a Trivial Pursuit partner? I am an utter research junkie.
As someone who doesn’t like to stand still long, I’ve luckily been awarded international residencies and fellowships including short-listed for the Academy of Motion PIctures Arts and Sciences Nicholl Fellowship, Praxis Fellowship, Berlinale Talent Campus, Berlinale Script Clinic, Canadian Film Centre Film Screenwriter’s Lab, Slamdance Top Ten Feature Screenplay, Klaustid, Can Serrat… amongst others.
Last year I was honoured as a contributing artist to the 2010 Cultural Olympiad Digital Edition. “Spring“, a comedy flick commissioned by CODE and was an integral part of Vancouver 2010, screening at Live Celebration sites, on Air Canada, Bell mobility, Bell Ice Cube, Ontario Pavilion, on the Olympic website, the event shuttle buses as well as at 20 locations around the UK to promote London 2012. ”Spring” was named “Best of Code.”
Comedy I wrote for director Neil Every.
A comedy-luge webisode I wrote and directed for ilovealuger.com
NBC Short Dramatic Film I penned for director Sheila Pye, producer Cher Harwysh at Canadian Film Centre.
Doc-interstitial I was recently hired to direct.
I originally cut my teeth in entertainment news, producing original video for CBC Citybeat, Newswatch and Newsworld. Not dampened by the bowels of the CBC building, I went on to produce and direct documentaries for the W Network, music videos for such indie stars as Ani Difranco, and collaborate with visual artists on works acquired by the Smithsonian.
